Kenpo Youth

Respect is the most important value that we teach. We teach the children to first be aware of potential danger, then to avoid it. Children learn how to set verbal boundaries, and how to physically defend themselves. They also learn that the challenge of mastering the movements of martial arts comes through self-discipline, practice, physical fitness, and an attitude of positive self-expectancy. We teach communication and goal attainment in a fun and motivational context. The children's curriculum is thematic and follows a progression of physical, mental, and emotional skills that teach them how to translate the lessons from Kenpo into the classroom, at home and with their friends. Increasing concentration and focus, anger management, how to set goals, coping with fear, bullies and stranger awareness are all parts of the process. Children begin their first year with the fundamentals of etiquette and personal introduction and proceed to the fundamentals of physical skills that find their roots in a variety of martial arts; boxing, wrestling, American Kenpo Karate, judo and Jujitsu. After some of the basics are established we move to the second level where they learn to work those basics with partners and in teams. Then, the students graduate to a new level of proficiency by testing new skills on focus pads and learning to use padded weapons. This fresh approach to teaching children keeps them engaged as they internalize the important values of respect, patience, perseverance, self-discipline and kindness.
